Labor Law and Work Permits for Alaska.

If you’re looking to pursue a career in entertainment for your child or if you are an entertainment industry professional looking to employ a child in your production, it is important that you know the child actor labor laws in both your home state and any state in which you intend to work.

    Alaska has extensive rules for the employment of minors in the entertainment industry. [AAC Title 8, Article 5, §300-340]

    Minors under 18 must submit a work permit application form to the Alaska Department of Labor along with parental consent and proof of age.  The application must also be completed by the employer or production company and approved by Alaska Department of Labor before work can begin.

    The employer portion of the permit application form requires detailed information, including:

    • Location and nature of employment

    • Dates, times and number of rehearsals and performances involving the child.

    • Detailed activities to be performed by the minor

    • Rate of pay

    • Proof of ‘approved’ Studio Teacher.

    • Proof of Alaska workers compensation insurance.

    We can find no evidence of any blocked trust account requirements in Alaska.

    Alaska requires the presence of an ‘approved’ Studio Teacher from birth to age 16 years at all times during the employment of a minor in entertainment as a condition of receiving a permit.  One studio teacher must be provided for the supervision and education of each group of 10 or fewer children on school days and one each group of 20 or fewer minors on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or during school vacation periods.

    A nurse is also required anytime infants from birth to 6 months are employed.  For babies under 6 weeks of age, one nurse and one studio teacher is required for every 3 or fewer infants.  A studio teacher who is properly medically licensed may fulfill both roles.  (8 AAC §05.315)
