Chapter 390: Theatrical Employment Under the Hawaii Child Labor Law

A permit is required for minors working in entertainment in the state of Hawaii. A permit will be approved by the Director of Labor and Industrial Relations if the following are completed:
A parent or guardian’s written consent to the employment is filed with Director of Labor and Industrial Relations.
The minor is accompanied by and is under the immediate and direct control of the person who files the consent or their adult designee.
The employment does not physically affect the health, safety or well-being of the minor.
The work is performed during periods when the minor is not legally required to attend school or when the minor is excused by school authorities from attending school.

The state of Hawaii requires a permit to employ minors in entertainment. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure the theatrical employment application form is completed correctly, signed by the employer, parent and minor, and submitted to the Director of Labor and Industrial Relations. Whenever employment would occur during a school year, the employer must also obtain a statement signed by an authorized school official indicating that the attendance at school and the school work of the minor are satisfactory.
