Labor Law and Work Permits for Maine.

Do you know the child actor labor laws for your state? If you’re looking to pursue a career in entertainment for your child or if you are an entertainment industry professional looking to employ a child in your production, it is important that you know the child actor labor laws in both your home state and any state in which you intend to work.

    Although, Maine has no minimum age and no hourly restrictions for child actors, minors under the age of 16 must have a work permit and approval from a local superintendent of schools.

    Minors under the age of 16 are required to have work permits. Once the minor has the promise of a job, she or he must take proof of age and parental permission to the office of their local school district. If the child is out of state, it needs to be taken to the superintendent of schools. Once completed, the forms will be mailed to the Maine Department of Labor for review and approval.

    The minor can not work until the Department of Labor approves the permit, which may take up to one week.

It is the responsibility of the production company or studio to contact the minor’s local school district.
