Labor Law and Work Permits for Michigan.

Do you know the child actor labor laws for your state? If you’re looking to pursue a career in entertainment for your child or if you are an entertainment industry professional looking to employ a child in your production, it is important that you know the child actor labor laws in both your home state and any state in which you intend to work.

    Minors employed as actors or performers in motion picture, theatrical, radio or television productions are required to obtain a work permit through the Michigan Department of Education.

    A permit is required for all minors working in the entertainment industry. The entertainment work permit application must be completed by the minor’s parents as well as the employer of the minor. The parent is responsible for providing the completed form to the school issuing officer and delivering the approved permit to the employer before work begins. Additionally, a doctors statement is required for minors under age six.

    The employer is responsible for filling in the appropriate portion of the performance arts application (above) for each minor they employ. The employer must have a completed permit on file before the minor begins work, and must provide adult supervision throughout the minor’s employment.

    Tip: Proof of workers compensation insurance is required although not listed on the application form.
