Labor Law and Work Permits for Missouri.

    Minors under 16 years of age are permitted to work in film provided certain guidelines are followed.     No child under 16 years of age may be employed in the entertainment industry without an entertainment work permit issued by the Director of Labor in the state of Missouri. Proof of age and written consent of the chid’s parent, legal custodian or guardian are required to obtain a permit. Also, no child shall be permitted at the place of employment, unless the parent, legal custodian, guardian or designated guardian of the child is present through the entire duration of employment.

    The state of Missouri requires the employer to submit a written statement describing the nature of the production and dates the minor will be employed. In addition, the employer shall designate one individual on each set, stage or other place of employment to coordinate all matters relating to the welfare of children and shall notify the parent, legal custodian or guardian of each child of the name of such individual.

    The state of Missouri does not require the presence of a teacher on set during the employment of a minor. However, a child’s education may not be neglected, so private instruction could be required. Parents should check with a child’s school regarding attendance and curriculum mandates and notify employers of educational requirements before work begins.

    Missouri Compulsory Attendance laws require all parents or guardians having custody or control of a child between the ages of seven and sixteen, ensure that the child is enrolled in and regularly attends some public, private, parochial school, or home school meeting the statutory requirements for home schooling, or a combination of such school for the full term of the school [RSMO 167.031].
