Exception: The Tennessee Protection of Minor Performers Act [LC Title 50, Chapters 5-201 through 5-222] permits a minor (or their parent/guardian) to seek court approval of a contract pursuant to which a minor agrees to provide artistic or creative services. The court-approval process is available to minors who desire to perform artistic or creative services in Tennessee, including minors who reside in the state and minors not residing in the state, as long as some or all of the services are to be provided in the state, or at least one of the other parties are doing business in the state. Court approval removes the minor’s “disability of non-age” with respect to the specific contract approved by the court (but not for any other purpose); further, any such court order shall require that 15% of the minor’s gross earnings pursuant to the contract be set aside by the minor’s employer in trust and preserved for the benefit of the minor until the minor reaches the age of majority.
