Labor Law and Work Permits for Washington DC.

Do you know the child actor labor laws for your state? If you’re looking to pursue a career in entertainment for your child or if you are an entertainment industry professional looking to employ a child in your production, it is important that you know the child actor labor laws in both your home state and any state in which you intend to work.

    The D.C. Board of Education is authorized to issue a theatrical employment permit to a minor under 18 years of age, permitting minors to perform on the stage of a licensed theatre, in a professional theatrical production, in a musical, dance recital or concert, radio or Television program, motion picture, print photography or fashion model, professional sports activity or circus. [§ 32–206.]

    * A minor shall not appear in more than two performances per day or 9 performances in one week.

    * Minors shall not be required to work before 7:00 AM or after 11:30 PM

    * Infants under 30 months (2.5 years) are required to have a licensed practical nurse with substantial pediatric experience present. One nurse per 3 or fewer babies.

    Work Hours

    * Babies under 6 months are permitted at the place of employment no more than 2 hours with 20 minutes maximum work time.

    * Toddlers between 6 and 30 months (2.5 years) may be permitted at the place of employment for 4 hours maximum with 2 hours maximum work time, the balance is rest & recreation.

    * Minors between 30 months and 7 years are permitted at the place of employment for a maximum of 6 hours, consisting of 3 hours work and 3 hours education and/or rest & recreation.

    Application for a theatrical employment work permit must be completed and signed by the production company, the parent and the minor and shall be filed at least 10 days prior to production with the D.C Board of Education. Minors under 16 years of age must also obtain a “Certificate of Physical Fitness”.

    Also required:

    * Birth Certificate, or other acceptable proof of age

    * Health Certificate (for minors under 16)

    * Social Security Number
